BASIC OVERVIEW
Sever's syndrome is a painful heel condition that affects growing children between the ages of nine and 14.
In this condition, the growing part of the heel bone grows faster than the tendon that connects on the back of the heel.
This tightens up the tendon and creates tension where it attaches to the heel.
Eventually, the tension causes the area to become inflamed and painful.
CAUSES
The actual pathology of the condition is one of more of an overuse syndrome in which the growth plate of the heel may become slightly displaced, causing pain.
The actual pathology of the condition is one of more of an overuse syndrome in which the growth plate of the heel may become slightly displaced, causing pain.
The cause of Sever's disease is not entirely clear.
It is most likely due to overuse or repeated minor trauma that happens in a lot of sporting activities - the cartilage join between the two parts of the bone can not take all the shear stress of the activities. Some unlucky children seem to be just more prone to it for an unknown reason - combine this with sport, especially if its on a hard surface and the risk of getting it increases.
I have this condition.
I have to stretch up to 6 times a day.
Where funny caps in my shoes when doing sport to lift the heel taking tension off my tendon.
Put ice on my ankle after any sporting activity, even if my ankle isn't hurting.
Put a gel/cream on my ankle any time it hurts.
Avoid as much sport as possible, especially running and jumping.
I can't do much to fix my ankle and I will be stuck with it for quite a while...I can't do the cross-country.
